7th Week 1~5th day

Nothing much for this Week,
Self Study RC Wall, Steel Struc, Excel VBA

6th Week Day 3~5

Pile Check

Labelling of pile num and group on plan to ease up inspection work

Check the working load on pile

( Different group of piles have different loading, EG 250 sized pile might have capacity of 1800 while 300 have capacity of 2500. Then, according to the best ratio of strength and number of pile, we can determine the pile that we want to use accordingly)

Stump Marking

Check Drawing Detailing

Some drawings might not been drawn properly and the value or arrangement might be wrong, so it will be consultant work to check it.

Check Design calculation of pile cap whether the calculation method is correct and the correctness of its answer.

6th Week Day 1 ~ 2

Continuation of Column marking.
5 Floors on 1st day
6 other floors on 2nd day

Learned :
Column loading must be reasonable with the load imposed and area which it includes.
to prevent any errors or miscalculation, we can double check the loading or compare the loading with the column nearby as the load transferred won't be much different for the same coverage of area.

5th Week Day 5

Task for this day is to Do Columns Marking for Entire Block of 12 floors.

Things done in morning:
  1. Check all the Columns in all floors
  2. Label all the Columns in Ground floor in different layer to ease up duplicating of label for usage later on. (Total of 447 ++columns labeled)
  3. As most of the column are interconnected with the floor above, The labelling of column will be same as the column below, which we can copy the label of the column named below to the floor above as long as it is at the some coordinate.
  4. Noted that the Modelling and Keyplan might not be the same for Architectural drawing and Engineering Drawing as Architectural Drawing tends to draw the Viewing Sight on plan view while engineering drawing will be on the cross section of that floor.

Things Done in Afternoon ~ Offwork:

  1. Continue do the Labelling of Columns and then do the printings of all 12 floors on A2 size paper.
  2. Acquired the loading on each column for all the floors from Inez
  3. Print out the loading on column for all floors for labelling of forces on the floor plan.
  4. Labelling of forces on floor plan will be done next week as time id not enough for all the biddings.

5th Week Day 4

In order to design RC Retaining wall, Eurocode, EC7 have to be studied to check the difference between BS8002 and EC7.

As a conclusion, the Difference of BS and EC is that BS is more conservative on the Safety factor while EC is more conservative on the Safety factor impose on the loading.
Hence, we cannot use the factored loading by EC for the BS design as it will cause over-conservative design.

Designed a RC retaining wall based on BS8002 and checked using RCC Spreadsheet.

5th Week Day 3

I was given a RCC Spreadsheet to do the RC Retaining Wall design which by any means will reduce the total design time as I do not have to do all the calculations manuallly.

However, before I can use the spreadsheet, I have to verify the accuracy and precision of the spreadsheet.

By using the formula and steps refered, I manage to find differences between RCC Spreadsheet and manual calculations.

As a result:
RCC Spreadsheet was more precise as it takes into consideration of all factors including:
Buoyancy Force (Cause by Water Level above the base of RC retaining Wall)
Cohesion force of base while calculating the Base resisting force for Sliding Check(Can be cancelled to be more conservative)

As a conclusion, RCC spreadsheet can be used to design RC retaining wall

5th Week Day 2

Study actual works of steel design and done some welding connection design as practice.

Work of Steel Design refered : Designer : Leena, Checker : Chen

Study the theory of RC Retaining Wall.
BS8002 using internet

Design of RC Retaining wall take into consideration of:

Sliding Control
- The Horizontal Force must be less than the resisting force of Friction and Cohesion(Cohesion might not be taken due to conservative reasons, by adding a key will result in higher resisting force yielded)

Overturning Control
By taking the moment at toe(Tip angle at bottom of retaining wall face), we will calculate the total clockwise and anticlockwise moment. The moment that will cause the RC Retaining wall to bend forward at the face is the overturning moment and the countering moment must be higher than the overturning moment by certain FOS.

Bearing Capacity Control
The Bearing capacity is the strength of soil holding the total vertical force exerted by the RC walll which is cause by the Weight of soil, Surcharge and also the weight of RC walll itself. The Bearing Capacity of the soil can be calculated using EC 7 (Eurocode) or using BS. The bearing Capacity must be higher than the total vertical force by certain FOS. (Around 2~3 according to Soil institution)

5th Week Day 1

Learn Welding Connection of Steel Design

Reference : BS5950

Welding Type : Fillet Weld
Full Butt Weld

- Fillet weld only connects the surface of the steel area and strength is taken by using Throat size , wt. While full butt weld will contribute in full strength of steel by taking strength of steel as it's full capacity of strength. Welding rod must comply with the grade of steel (Refer BS5950)
